Dave Barriger
Dave has worked with wood since 1949, developing a deep understanding and appreciation for it’s diverse and beautiful qualities. He retired from Seminole Community College where his experience as a college professor of biology and botany has given him an extensive knowledge of growth characteristics found in the variety of hardwoods growing in this country.
Since Dave began turning in 1964, he has combined his knowledge, skill, and natural artistic talent to produce uniquely crafted vessels. He strives to produce an aesthetic balance between artistic form and the natural beauty found in the unusual wood pieces. He often leaves natural edges and bark to enhance the composition and works primarily with green wood.
He has also developed a unique form he calls "Elevated Vessels". Dave’s turnings are in private collections throughout the United States and in several European countries and Asia. He exhibits pieces in various Florida galleries and has shown his work in top art shows, including Mt. Dora Art Festival, Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival, and The Festival of the Masters, Central Pennsylvania, and Ann Arbor Michigan. He has received many awards for his work.
Dave is a long time member of the American Association of Woodturners and served two terms (six years beginning in 1996) as a Director during which he chaired the conference committee for three national symposiums and served two years as president. In the summer of 2003 he was asked to fill a board vacancy and served another two and a half year term. He has also been involved with the Society for Workers in Early Arts and Trades, The International Wood Collectors Society, and Florida Craftsman Incorporated.
